Cornell Community
Town of Markham, Ontario
The Cornell Community began in 1994 as an initiative of the Province of Ontario. The intent was to design an extensive new community on 1,000 hectares of former airport reserve lands, of which 625 hectares were proposed for development. The design is an effective response to the shortcomings of conventional suburban development. It provides a model for compact and sustainable development within the Town of Markham’s new urban expansion area, while providing for the full range of community services for its residents. The community, currently housing over 3,000 people in 10,000 dwelling units, has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative in North America and is frequently visited by delegations who come to see Cornell for themselves.
