York University Development Corporation, Toronto, ON | 2009-ongoing
The Planning Partnership was retained by York University as a planning consultant for the recently updated Secondary Plan for Keele Campus. The Planning Partnership subsequently led a team to update York University’s Keele Campus Master Plan. The Planning Partnership designed and facilitated a two-year consultation program for engaging students, faculty, and staff in the master planning process. This consultation program included a range of in-person consultation events, including focus groups with faculty and staff, special presentations and meetings with various campus groups and departments, a roving information booth staffed by York University students, and open houses. An online engagement strategy complemented the face-to-face program and included a dedicated project website, a Facebook page, an active Twitter account, and a project blog. Together, these consultation tools allowed participants to share insights on relevant opportunities and constraints, and to guide key directions and priorities for implementation.
The needs and values expressed by the University community throughout the consultation underpin the fundamental organizing principles of the Master Plan. Key strategies for change are described according to three lenses: Pedestrians First at York University, Greening York University, and Infilling York University. Specific strategies detail a broad range of recommendations to provide a guiding framework for the continued evolution of the campus’ physical form.
In recognition of The Planning Partnership’s innovative approach to consultation, the Master Plan Update was awarded the 2014 Gold Facilitation Impact Award from the International Association of Facilitators.
